Common questions

Will my own phone still ring if I forward my calls?
It depends which type of forwarding you choose. Forward-on-no-answer lets your phone ring first and only sends the call onward if nobody picks up, so you keep answering the calls you can. Forward-all sends every call away immediately and your phone never rings. For a business, forward-on-no-answer is almost always the right choice.
Do I need to change my phone number?
No. Call forwarding keeps your existing number exactly as it is. Your customers keep calling the number on your website, your van and your Google listing, and the calls you don't answer get passed on automatically.
Why do my forwarded calls still go to voicemail?
Carrier voicemail usually picks up before conditional forwarding can fire. Rogers states explicitly that conditional forwarding will not work while voicemail is activated on the line, and Fido says the same. If your calls keep landing in voicemail, ask your provider to remove voicemail from the line.
Does call forwarding cost anything?
That depends on your provider and plan. TELUS includes 3,000 forwarded minutes a month on plans with the feature and charges 75 cents a minute beyond that. Koodo sells call forwarding as a $5 monthly add-on, or bills 60 cents a minute pay-per-use. Long-distance charges can also apply if the destination is outside your local calling area, so check your own plan first.
Can I tell which carrier a Canadian number is on?
Not reliably. Canadian numbers are fully portable, so a number can move between carriers while keeping its area code. The area code tells you the province it was issued in, not who provides service today. The only accurate source is the person who pays the bill — which is why this tool asks you to pick your provider rather than guessing.
How do I turn call forwarding off again?
Every provider has a cancel code, usually the activation code with a hash in front of it. The exact code for your provider is shown alongside the activation code in the tool above, and in the reference table on this page.
